In a significant development in a tragic case from Pune, a 19-year-old youth has been apprehended by the police on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. This arrest comes approximately a month after a 28-year-old man was discovered deceased near his residential building in the Ambegaon area of the city.
Arrest and Police Custody Details
The accused, identified as Tejas Sanas, a resident of Ambegaon, was taken into custody on Thursday. Following his arrest, he has been remanded to police custody until Saturday, as authorities continue their investigation into the incident. Assistant Inspector Swapnil Patil of the Bharati Vidyapeeth police station confirmed the arrest and provided further insights into the case.
Background of the Fatal Incident
The victim, Saurabh Shikhare, was found unconscious near his residential building in Ambegaon on December 25 of last year. He was promptly admitted to a private hospital located in Narhe for medical treatment. Tragically, despite receiving care, Shikhare succumbed to his injuries and passed away on December 28.
A post-mortem examination was conducted, which revealed that the cause of death was internal injuries to the head. Initially, a case of accidental death was registered with the Ambegaon police based on the preliminary findings. However, as the investigation progressed, new evidence emerged that pointed towards a more sinister sequence of events.
Investigation Unravels the Truth
Through diligent police work, it was uncovered that on the evening of December 24, Shikhare had gone out with two of his friends. The police team managed to trace these two individuals, who provided crucial information about what transpired in the early hours of December 25.
According to their account, the trio had ventured near the back gate of Bharati Vidyapeeth to enjoy some egg bhurji from a local food cart. It was at this location that they encountered four other individuals, leading to a heated argument that quickly escalated into violence.
Sequence of Events Leading to the Tragedy
As the altercation intensified, the accused individuals began assaulting Shikhare. One of his friends managed to flee the scene in fear, while Shikhare and the other friend attempted to escape as well. However, the assailants pursued them and continued the physical attack.
During this chaotic episode, Shikhare lost his balance and fell to the ground, sustaining severe injuries. His friend then helped him into an autorickshaw and dropped him near the gate of his building before departing. Unfortunately, Shikhare collapsed on the road and fell unconscious, where he was later discovered.
Police Breakthrough and Ongoing Search
The investigation took a crucial turn when police recovered CCTV footage from the vicinity of the incident. This visual evidence allowed them to ascertain the identity of Tejas Sanas as one of the perpetrators. Acting on a tip-off, the police successfully arrested Sanas on Thursday.
Assistant Inspector Patil emphasized that the search for the three other accused individuals involved in the crime has already been launched. The police are actively pursuing leads to bring all those responsible to justice.
Profiles of the Victim and Accused
Further details revealed that Saurabh Shikhare was currently unemployed and was undergoing treatment for a medical condition at the time of the incident. Interestingly, the arrested accused, Tejas Sanas, was also reported to be jobless, adding another dimension to this tragic case.
This incident highlights the devastating consequences of street altercations and underscores the importance of thorough police investigation in uncovering the truth behind what might initially appear as accidental deaths.
