Pune Authorities Launch Intensive Week-Long Drive Against Illegal Hoardings and Encroachments
In a significant move to enhance urban aesthetics and public safety, the Pune City Police and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) have jointly announced a comprehensive week-long drive targeting illegal hoardings, banners, and footpath encroachments. The initiative, which commenced on Wednesday, aims to restore order and accessibility across the city's public spaces.
Zero Tolerance Policy Against Illegal Advertisements
Pune Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar emphasized a strict stance against unauthorized advertisements. "We will not tolerate illegal hoardings and banners in the city. These will be taken down immediately," Kumar stated. He further warned that legal action would be pursued against individuals whose names or contact details appear on such materials, underscoring the drive's enforcement rigor.
Focus on High-Traffic Areas and Hawker Management
The crackdown will prioritize busy thoroughfares, including FC Road, JM Road, and Baner, where illegal hawking and encroachments are prevalent. "We will take continuous action against illegal hawkers on these roads. Footpaths will be cleared within the next week," Kumar affirmed. This targeted approach aims to alleviate pedestrian congestion and improve mobility in these commercial hubs.
PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram highlighted the scale of the issue, noting that Pune has over 22,000 hawkers. "Illegal hoardings and banners are an eyesore. We will remove them," he declared, reinforcing the civic body's commitment to urban cleanliness. Ram also addressed safety concerns, mentioning that approximately 3,000 legal hoardings will undergo structural audits before the monsoon season to prevent accidents.
Broader Efforts to Decongest Roads and Enhance Traffic Flow
Beyond hoardings and hawkers, the drive includes measures to address vehicular and spatial encroachments. Kumar explained that the police and PMC will identify open spaces to relocate unclaimed vehicles currently obstructing roads. "We will remove all encroachments from roads. It will help the police and the civic officials redress traffic bottlenecks," he said, indicating a holistic strategy to improve traffic management and public safety.
This coordinated effort between law enforcement and municipal authorities reflects a proactive approach to urban governance, aiming to foster a cleaner, safer, and more organized environment for Pune's residents and visitors.
