A 40-year-old farmer from Parwadi village in Baramati taluka died by suicide on Sunday after allegedly being pressured by a moneylender and his associates to pay additional money against a loan he had taken. The deceased, identified as Danesh Gosavi, was found hanging from a tree on his farm. The Baramati Rural police recovered a suicide note near the spot, which named the moneylender and four others.
Case Registered Under Abetment to Suicide
The Baramati taluka police have registered a case against five accused under Section 108 (abetment to suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and relevant provisions of the Maharashtra Money-Lending (Regulation) Act. The farmer's wife filed a complaint with the police, leading to the registration of the case.
Details of the Loan and Harassment
According to the complaint, Gosavi had borrowed Rs 1 lakh from the moneylender, a resident of Indapur, in December 2024 for a three-month period. Three of his friends allegedly introduced him to the moneylender. The farmer repaid Rs 1.7 lakh, including principal and interest, in April 2025. However, the accused allegedly claimed that the interest amount had not been paid and demanded more money.
An officer from the Baramati taluka police stated, “The farmer’s three friends, the moneylender, and the latter’s wife allegedly pressured the victim to pay additional money, claiming he had not paid the interest. The farmer gave them Rs 3 lakh more, but the accused demanded another Rs 1.5 lakh.”
Threats and Forcible Taking of Jewellery
On May 12, the accused went to the farmer’s home and threatened him over the money. They forcibly took the gold earrings of his wife and told him to pay the remaining Rs 1.5 lakh by May 25 to retrieve the jewellery. The complaint further states that the accused told the farmer that he would have no option but to end his life if he failed to pay.
On Sunday, Gosavi did not return home from his farm for lunch. His nephew went to the farm around 3 pm and found him hanging from a tree with a rope. He was rushed to a rural hospital in Baramati, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
The police are investigating the case, and no arrests have been made so far.
