The Pune district rural police have taken custody of a sonography machine supplier, Narendra Raosaheb Thakare from Wagholi, in connection with an illegal sex determination case registered at the Yavat police station. The arrest was made last week.
Details of the Arrest
Superintendent of Police Sandeep Singh Gill stated, "We arrested Thakare in our case. The Wagholi police had previously arrested him in a similar case. Thakare had supplied a portable sonography machine to Annasaheb Giri, a suspect in the sex determination case." Giri, who has passed Class XII, was arrested in May.
Thakare is the third person arrested in this case. Earlier, the police had apprehended a medical practitioner, Atul Ankush Jadhav, from the Lohegaon-Wagholi Road area. Gill added, "We suspect that Thakare supplied such machines to others in Pune and adjoining districts. Veterinarians typically use this type of machine to examine and treat animals."
Ongoing Investigation
The suspects involved in the case are alleged to have carried out several illegal abortions at hospitals across Pune rural, Satara, and Ahilyanagar districts since 2020. The police are now searching for two medical practitioners from Bhor. Additionally, they have identified 13 other medical practitioners who were in contact with Giri and the other accused. "We will question them soon," Gill confirmed.
This case highlights the continued efforts by authorities to crack down on illegal sex determination practices, which are prohibited under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act.
