Pune Police Launch Major Crackdown on Triple-Seat Riding
In a significant enforcement drive aimed at enhancing road safety, the Pune city police on Tuesday apprehended a staggering 1,500 individuals for riding triple-seat on two-wheelers. Each offender was slapped with a hefty fine of Rs 1,000 as part of a rigorous crackdown that commenced at 9 AM and persisted well into the late evening hours.
Widespread Police Operation Across City Roads
Pune City Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar detailed the extensive nature of the operation. "Apart from our dedicated traffic police personnel, we mobilized staff from various police stations to participate in this critical exercise," Kumar stated. "Our teams meticulously checked all city roads, including internal lanes and main arterial routes, specifically targeting those flouting the triple-seat riding rule. The seized two-wheelers were promptly transported to traffic divisions for further legal action."
Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil provided further insights into the financial implications of the drive. "We successfully caught 1,500 triple-seat riders and levied a fine of Rs 1,000 on each one," Patil confirmed. "In total, this effort resulted in the collection of Rs 16.18 lakh in fines, issued through 2,144 traffic challans." Patil also noted that many of these vehicles had accumulated pending fines, and the drivers were instructed to clear those outstanding amounts immediately.
Broader Traffic Violations Addressed
The police action was not limited to triple-seat offenses alone. During the same operation, authorities took stringent measures against 5,921 motorists for a variety of other traffic rule violations, underscoring a comprehensive approach to road discipline.
Commissioner Kumar issued a stern warning to the public, emphasizing the continuity of the drive. "Our enforcement campaign will persist on Wednesday and beyond," he declared. "We have made a clear appeal to all motorists to adhere to traffic regulations; failure to comply will result in strong punitive actions." Kumar also highlighted a security concern, noting, "It is important to recognize that sometimes, criminals exploit triple-seat riding on motorcycles or scooters as a getaway method after committing offenses, making this crackdown crucial for public safety."
Action Against Illegal Silencer Shops
In a related move to curb noise pollution and maintain public order, the police sealed a shop located in Warje for its involvement in fitting illegal 'fataka' silencers to motorcycles. "These unauthorized silencers severely disturb the peace and tranquility of our neighborhoods, creating nuisance and contributing to sound pollution on city roads," Commissioner Kumar explained. "We are committed to taking decisive action against any establishments that install such illegal modifications on vehicles."
