Pune Rural Police Maintains High Vigil After Askarwadi Violence During Ramzan

The Pune rural police maintained a heightened state of alert and deployed significant security measures in the Askarwadi area and surrounding villages throughout Sunday afternoon and evening. This proactive response followed a violent incident reported on Friday evening, which disrupted the peaceful observance of Ramzan for a group of individuals.

Police Statement on Security Measures

Superintendent of Police (Pune Rural) Sandeep Singh Gill emphasized the department's commitment to preventing further unrest. "We are maintaining a vigil in the area and do not want any further trouble," stated Gill, underscoring the priority placed on public safety and order during this sensitive period.

Details of the Friday Evening Attack

The violence erupted on Friday evening when a group of 14 men from Kondhwa visited the Askarwadi lakeside to break their Ramzan fast. According to reports, they were allegedly attacked by a larger group of 100 to 150 individuals. The assailants reportedly demanded that the victims leave the location immediately and objected to their attire. The attack involved the use of sticks, whips, and sharp weapons, resulting in injuries to the victims.

Sunday Security Deployment and Outcomes

Inspector Kumar Kadam of the Saswad police provided insights into the security arrangements for Sunday. "We have deployed bandobast in the Askarwadi area and nearby villages where people from Kondhwa visit to break their fast. As it was Sunday, many people from Kondhwa started arriving in the Bopdev Ghat area and adjoining villages to break their fast, so we maintained tight security in these villages," explained Kadam. The police confirmed that no untoward incidents were reported on Sunday, indicating the effectiveness of their measures.

Investigation and Suspect Identification

When questioned about arrests or detentions related to the attack, Inspector Kadam detailed the investigative steps taken. "On Saturday and Sunday, we called some local villagers whose descriptions matched those of the suspects and asked the injured persons to identify them. However, the injured persons told the police that none of them was involved in the assault," he reported. This highlights the challenges faced by authorities in identifying and apprehending the perpetrators amidst the ongoing investigation.

The Pune rural police's swift and robust response aims to restore calm and ensure the safety of all residents, particularly during the holy month of Ramzan. Continued vigilance and community cooperation are seen as key to preventing any recurrence of such violence in the region.
