Pune Police Raid Rescues Minors, Arrests Bangladeshi Women

Major Police Operation in Pune's Red Light Area Leads to Multiple Arrests and Rescues

In a significant crackdown on illegal activities, Pune police conducted an extensive 10-hour combing operation in the Budhwar Peth red light area, resulting in the arrest of two Bangladeshi women, the rescue of several minor girls, and the apprehension of a man found in possession of hashish and other drugs. The operation, which began late on Tuesday night and continued until Wednesday evening, involved a substantial police contingent and targeted multiple establishments.

Details of the Police Raid and Findings

Joint Commissioner of Police Ranjan Kumar Sharma provided insights into the operation, stating that a surprise combing action was carried out by a strong team comprising the crime branch and local police station personnel. The police contingent, consisting of over 500 officers, meticulously checked 41 buildings known to house brothels, examining 426 women and 290 men during the process.

During the combing, authorities discovered two Bangladeshi women who were staying illegally in the area. Additionally, several minor girls were found, and police are currently verifying their ages with the assistance of medical officials to ensure accurate documentation and appropriate follow-up actions.

Arrests and Ongoing Investigations

In a related incident during the operation, the police team arrested Rameshwar Biradar, a 31-year-old resident of Latur, for possessing hashish and drug syringes. This arrest highlights the broader scope of illegal activities being addressed in the area.

The police have initiated a process to register cases against brothel keepers and other individuals involved, with the Faraskhana police station handling the proceedings. This step underscores the commitment to holding accountable those who exploit vulnerable individuals.

Background and Previous Incidents

This operation follows a similar incident last month, where police rescued a Bangladeshi woman from a brothel. She provided a statement alleging that a woman constable from the Faraskhana police was aware she was forced into the flesh trade but did not raise an alarm despite knowing her background. Consequently, the woman police constable was suspended, reflecting ongoing internal accountability measures.

The recent raid emphasizes the persistent efforts by Pune police to combat human trafficking, drug-related crimes, and exploitation in red light areas, aiming to safeguard minors and vulnerable populations from such illicit activities.
