Pune Police Intervene to Save Man from Suicide After Online Loan Scam
In a dramatic intervention, the Parvati police in Pune successfully prevented a 48-year-old unemployed man from harming himself on Thursday. The man, who had been distressed over an online loan scam, was traced to a hotel on Sinhagad Road where he was found writing a suicide note.
Background of the Financial Distress
The crisis began last year when the man, a resident of Sahakarnagar, needed money and responded to an online advertisement for a loan application. He applied for a loan of Rs 20,000, which was credited to his account within minutes. However, this seemingly quick solution spiraled into a nightmare of financial exploitation.
Senior inspector Rajendra Sahane of Parvati police explained, "The man ended up repaying a staggering Rs 5 lakh to the fraudsters. Despite this enormous payment, the suspects kept demanding more money and escalated their threats."
Escalating Threats and Harassment
The fraudsters employed severe psychological pressure tactics. They threatened to upload morphed photographs of the victim on social media, claiming this would defame him in society. Additionally, they asserted that they had contact numbers of his relatives and friends, using this information to repeatedly demand more payments.
The continuous harassment took a severe toll on the man's mental health. On March 6, he left his house without informing anyone, prompting his family to search for him across various parts of Pune. His wife, a 45-year-old teacher, eventually lodged a missing person's complaint with the Parvati police on March 8.
Police Investigation and Rescue Operation
The Parvati police launched an intensive search operation. They analyzed CCTV footage from multiple locations and discovered that the man was headed towards Shivajinagar. Their investigation traced his movements to a lodge in Shivajinagar, but by the time police reached there, he had already left.
Senior inspector Sahane detailed the final phase of the operation: "We continued our search and eventually traced him to a hotel on Sinhagad Road. Our team reached the hotel on Thursday afternoon and found him in the process of writing a suicide note."
The timely intervention by police personnel prevented what could have been a tragic outcome. The man was provided with immediate support and counseling following the rescue.
