Pune Research Guide Arrested for Abetting PhD Student's Suicide After Harassment
A 50-year-old scientist and research guide affiliated with a central government research institute in Pune was arrested on Saturday on charges of abetting the suicide of a 30-year-old PhD student. The arrest follows allegations that he sexually and mentally harassed the student, leading to her tragic death.
Details of the Incident
The PhD student, who was studying botany, was found hanging by a dupatta tied to the ceiling fan in her room at her residence in Chinchwad on Saturday afternoon. The discovery was made when her parents received no response from her room, prompting them to check on her.
On Sunday, a magisterial court in Pimpri ordered the research guide's remand in police custody until April 15, allowing authorities to continue their investigation into the case.
Police Investigation and Charges
Investigating officer Inspector Bhojraj Misal of the Bhosari MIDC police, who led the arrest, stated that the charges are based on a note purportedly written by the student and a complaint filed by her father. The note indicated that the research guide was not only mentally harassing her but also behaving inappropriately.
The police have arrested the man under Section 108 (abetment of suicide) and Section 74 (outraging the modesty of a woman) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The note recovered from the scene will be sent to handwriting experts for further analysis to verify its authenticity.
Background of Harassment
According to the complaint lodged by the student's father, the accused had been misbehaving and mentally harassing his daughter since August of last year. The student had been under significant stress in recent days and had confided in her parents about the ongoing harassment.
In response, her parents approached the institute and the research guide. The guide reportedly provided a written apology, promising that such incidents would not recur. Despite this assurance, the student took the extreme step of ending her life.
Police Statements and Ongoing Probe
Senior Police Inspector Ganesh Jamdar emphasized that the note explicitly stated the PhD guide's misbehavior and mental harassment drove her to suicide. Inspector Misal added that the police acted swiftly upon receiving the complaint, arresting the accused immediately.
Investigations are currently ongoing, with authorities delving deeper into the circumstances surrounding the harassment and the events leading up to the student's death. The case highlights serious concerns about academic environments and the need for robust mechanisms to address harassment in educational institutions.
