Pune Garment Shop Owner Arrested for Voyeurism After Installing Hidden CCTV Camera

The Pune Rural police have made a significant arrest in a disturbing case of voyeurism, apprehending a garment shop owner from Maval taluka on Wednesday. The arrest followed a formal complaint lodged by a woman shopper who discovered a concealed CCTV camera in the shop's storeroom, which was being used as an unauthorized trial room.

Incident Details and Police Action

According to police reports, the incident occurred on March 16 when the complainant visited the shop to purchase new clothes. The shop owner directed her to the storeroom, falsely claiming that no proper trial room was available. While inside, the woman noticed a CCTV camera installed in the room and immediately confronted the owner about its presence.

Instead of providing an explanation, the owner reportedly threatened the woman with dire consequences, prompting her to approach the Pune Rural police on Tuesday to file an official complaint. Based on her statement and subsequent investigations, the police swiftly arrested the accused under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Charges and Investigation Findings

The shop owner has been charged under Section 77 for voyeurism and Section 352 for intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace of the BNS. During the investigation, police uncovered that this was not an isolated incident.

An officer from the Pune Rural police stated, "Investigations revealed that the accused routinely sent women shoppers to the storeroom under the pretext of a trial room and used the CCTV camera to record them without their knowledge or consent." The police are continuing their probe to determine the full extent of the recordings and identify any other potential victims.

Broader Implications and Community Safety

This case highlights critical issues regarding privacy and safety in retail environments, especially for women. The use of surveillance equipment in private spaces like trial rooms is a severe violation of trust and legal boundaries. Authorities emphasize the importance of vigilance and prompt reporting of such incidents to prevent further exploitation.

The Pune Rural police have assured the public that they are taking strict measures to ensure such violations are addressed promptly. They encourage anyone with similar experiences or information to come forward, reinforcing their commitment to upholding law and order under the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita framework.
