Pune: Speeding Car Kills Pedestrian, Injures Stall Owner and Driver on Katraj-Dehu Bypass
A tragic accident on the Katraj-Dehu Road bypass in Bavdhan, Pune, resulted in the death of a pedestrian and injuries to two others after a speeding car crashed into a roadside nira stall on Saturday. The incident occurred near the High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL), highlighting concerns over road safety in the area.
Details of the Fatal Incident
The accident took place around 3 pm on Saturday, when a car driven by a 40-year-old software engineer from Bavdhan was speeding on the service road. According to police sub-inspector Sarang Thakare of the Bavdhan police, the driver lost control of the vehicle. Instead of turning towards the bypass, the car went straight and crashed into a nira stall operated by Maya Bhandari.
The impact was severe, causing the stall to topple. The car then struck Zahiruddin Kamaluddin Khan, a 29-year-old air conditioner mechanic from Kondhwa who was standing a few metres away from the stall. Khan, who hailed from Balrampur in Uttar Pradesh, died on the spot due to the collision.
Injuries and Legal Actions
Maya Bhandari, the stall owner, suffered injuries to her legs as she was inside the stall at the time of the crash. The car driver also sustained head injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital. Police have confirmed that his condition is being monitored.
In response to the incident, the Bavdhan police have booked the driver under Sections 106 (causing death by negligence) and 281 (rash driving) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. This legal action underscores the seriousness of the offense and aims to ensure accountability for the reckless driving that led to the fatality.
Location and Road Safety Concerns
The nira stall was situated at a critical junction where the service road connects to the Dehu Road corridor of the bypass near HEMRL. This spot has now come under scrutiny for potential safety hazards, as the accident raises questions about traffic management and speed control measures in the area.
Authorities are investigating the exact speed of the car at the time of the accident, with initial reports indicating it was high enough to cause significant damage. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of speeding and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws to prevent such tragedies in the future.
Local residents and officials are calling for improved safety protocols on the Katraj-Dehu Road bypass to protect pedestrians and vendors alike. As the community mourns the loss of Zahiruddin Kamaluddin Khan, efforts are being made to support the injured and address road safety issues in Pune.
