Pune Software Engineer Arrested for Targeting Elderly Relatives in Multiple Thefts

Police investigations in Pune have uncovered a disturbing pattern of thefts allegedly committed by a 31-year-old software engineer against her own elderly relatives. The woman, who holds both BTech and MBA degrees and works at a prominent IT company in Hinjewadi IT Park, was initially detained last week for an attempted robbery in Karvenagar where she allegedly sprayed a solution on her 75-year-old maternal grandmother.

Multiple Incidents Across Pune Neighborhoods

Further investigation has revealed that this was not an isolated incident. According to senior inspector Ulhas Kadam of the Alankar police, the woman targeted two other elderly relatives in separate thefts over recent weeks. "In the Sinhagad Road incident, she stole 15 tolas of gold from her maternal uncle. In the Kothrud incident, she managed to steal some valuables from another uncle," Kadam stated.

Police have served the woman with a formal notice requiring her cooperation with the ongoing investigation into the robbery attempt against her grandmother. The officer emphasized that these were calculated crimes against vulnerable family members.

Financial Motive Behind the Crimes

While the woman has not disclosed her exact motives, investigators have developed a clear theory based on their findings. "She did not disclose the exact motive behind the thefts, but investigators suspect that she suffered heavy financial losses in share-trading during and after the Covid pandemic," Kadam explained. "She wanted to recover her losses by stealing valuables from the homes of her elderly relatives."

This financial desperation appears to have driven her to target those closest to her. During questioning, she reportedly revealed that elderly relatives were "easy targets as they live alone and did not object to her visiting their homes."

Family Dynamics and Recovery of Stolen Property

The case has revealed complex family dynamics. The stolen gold from the Sinhagad Road incident was recovered and returned to her maternal uncle after the family initiated the process of withdrawing their complaint, considering their relationship with the accused woman. "We have returned the jewellery to her maternal uncle and the theft case registered with the Sinhagad Road police has been closed," Kadam confirmed.

The woman's husband, who is also a software engineer, told police he was completely unaware of her criminal activities. "The husband said she would leave home simply saying she was visiting her relatives," Kadam reported. The couple has a one-year-old son, adding another layer of complexity to this domestic crime story.

Legal Proceedings and Charges

Police have filed formal cases against the technology professional under sections 309 (robbery) and 303 (theft) of the newly implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The charges reflect the serious nature of the alleged crimes, particularly the violent attempt against her grandmother that involved spraying a solution during the robbery attempt.

This case highlights several concerning trends, including the vulnerability of elderly individuals living alone and the potential consequences of significant financial losses. The investigation continues as police work to understand the full extent of the woman's activities and whether there might be additional victims or incidents.
