Pune Teenager Injured in Accidental Firearm Discharge at Mundhwa Open Ground
A 17-year-old boy in Pune suffered a serious stomach injury after a bullet accidentally discharged while he and four other youngsters were allegedly playing with a country-made firearm at an open ground in Mundhwa on Wednesday night. The incident, which has raised significant concerns about public safety and juvenile delinquency, led to police action over the weekend.
Police Investigation and Arrests
The injured teenager, a resident of the same locality, filed a formal complaint with the Mundhwa police station on Saturday night. Senior inspector Smita Wasnik of the Mundhwa police station provided details, stating, "All four youngsters booked in the case have criminal antecedents, with cases of offences against the body registered against them." Police have arrested three of the individuals – a 21-year-old and two 19-year-olds – while the fourth, a minor, has been detained for further questioning.
According to the complainant, the four others discovered the pistol at the open ground and were handling it recklessly. However, Inspector Wasnik expressed skepticism, noting, "The complainant stated that the four others had found the pistol at the open ground and were playing with it. However, we suspect this may be a fabricated story and are investigating this angle." The police are probing whether the firearm was illegally possessed or involved in other criminal activities.
Medical Treatment and Hospital Delays
The injured teenager was promptly admitted to Sassoon General Hospital, where medical professionals reported his condition as stable following treatment. Initially, the three arrested men and the detained minor took the boy to a nearby private hospital, but he was later referred to Sassoon General Hospital for more specialized care. Inspector Wasnik highlighted a concerning delay in the case reporting, explaining, "The private hospital as well as Sassoon General Hospital did not send the medico-legal case report to the police station. The spot of the incident is isolated and rarely visited. We will probe why neither hospital informed us earlier, as it could have helped us learn about the incident much sooner." This oversight has prompted an internal investigation into hospital protocols for reporting such incidents.
Background of the Accused and Legal Charges
All four individuals involved are unemployed school dropouts who frequently roam the city on motorcycles. Their parents work as daily wage laborers, adding a socio-economic dimension to the case. Inspector Wasnik emphasized, "All four are unemployed. They are school dropouts and often roam around the city on motorcycles, while their parents are daily wage workers." The police have registered a case under charges of rash and negligent acts endangering human life and personal safety, reflecting the serious nature of the incident.
The investigation continues as authorities work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the firearm and the actions of those involved. This incident underscores broader issues of gun safety, youth crime, and public health reporting in urban areas like Pune.
