Pune Traffic Police Intensify Crackdown on Triple-Seat Riding
In a sustained effort to enhance road safety, the Pune traffic police conducted a rigorous drive for the second consecutive day on Wednesday, resulting in the apprehension and fining of 829 triple-seat riders across various parts of the city. This initiative follows a similar crackdown on Tuesday, where 1,500 offenders were caught, highlighting the authorities' commitment to curbing dangerous driving practices.
Counselling Sessions and Enforcement Actions
On Wednesday morning, Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Himmat Jadhav led a counselling session at the police headquarters in Shivajinagar. This session targeted the 1,500 triple-seat riders apprehended the previous day, educating them on the hazards of reckless driving and providing guidance on safe and careful navigation of city roads.
Joint Commissioner of Police Ranjan Kumar Sharma provided detailed insights into the enforcement outcomes. "In the last two days, we have impounded 1,380 vehicles for repeatedly breaching traffic rules and for failing to respond to fine messages issued by the police," he stated. "Motorists can reclaim their vehicles upon payment of the imposed fines." Additionally, Sharma reported that 40 FIRs have been registered against motorcycle riders for rash and negligent driving, underscoring the legal repercussions of such violations.
Financial Penalties and Future Measures
The financial impact of the crackdown has been significant, with a total of Rs 43.53 lakh collected in fines from triple-seat riders and other traffic rule violators over the two-day period. Sharma emphasized the ongoing nature of the drive, warning, "Despite these actions, if the situation continues to remain the same on city roads, we will intensify our efforts to ensure compliance with traffic regulations."
The crackdown, which commenced at 9 am on Tuesday and extended into the late evening, involved imposing a fine of Rs 1,000 on each offender caught riding triple-seat on two-wheelers. This proactive approach aims to deter future violations and promote a safer commuting environment for all residents of Pune.
