Two Separate Truck Accidents in Pune Result in Fatalities

In a tragic series of events on Thursday, two motorcyclists lost their lives in separate road accidents involving trucks in Pune. The incidents, which occurred in different parts of the city, have highlighted ongoing concerns about road safety and traffic enforcement.

First Accident: Elderly Man Killed Near Empress Garden

The first fatal collision took place near the Empress Garden on Race Course Road at approximately 5:10 PM. The victim has been identified as Hatjindersingh Amarsingh Makkar, a 70-year-old resident of Citadel Society on B T Kawade Road in Ghorpadi.

According to police reports, Makkar was returning home after offering prayers at a local gurdwara, following his daily routine, when a truck collided with his two-wheeler. Assistant Sub-Inspector Sampat Auchare provided details of the immediate aftermath.

"The truck driver promptly called the 108 emergency helpline number and also contacted the victim's son by phone to inform him about the incident," said Auchare. "Despite being rushed to a hospital, Makkar succumbed to severe injuries sustained in the collision."

Based on a complaint filed by the deceased's son, Tigenderjeet Makkar, at the Wanavdi police station, authorities have booked the truck driver on multiple charges. The case includes sections 106(1), 281, and 324(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act, primarily citing negligence.

Second Incident: Hit-and-Run at Handewadi

In a separate incident earlier the same day, a speeding truck struck and killed a motorcyclist at Handewadi around 11:30 AM. The victim has been identified as Azam Abdulrauf Khan, a 38-year-old resident of Kondhwa.

Police investigation revealed that after hitting Khan from behind, the truck driver failed to stop at the accident scene, making this a clear case of hit-and-run. The Fursungi police station has registered a case against the unidentified truck driver under BNS sections 106 and 281, in addition to various sections of the Motor Vehicle Act.

Legal Proceedings and Road Safety Concerns

Both accidents have resulted in serious legal actions under the newly implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which replaces the Indian Penal Code. The charges reflect the gravity of the incidents and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations.

The contrasting responses of the drivers involved—one who remained at the scene and attempted to help, and another who fled—highlight different aspects of road accident scenarios that authorities must address. These tragedies have reignited discussions about:

  • Enhanced traffic monitoring on busy Pune roads
  • Stricter enforcement of speed limits for commercial vehicles
  • Improved road infrastructure and safety measures
  • Public awareness campaigns about defensive driving

Police officials have emphasized that investigations into both cases are ongoing, with efforts underway to identify and apprehend the driver involved in the Handewadi hit-and-run incident. The community has been urged to come forward with any information that might assist in the investigation.
