The complainant, a 37-year-old woman who runs an investment consultancy firm with her husband, first reported a theft on October 22, 2025. She informed the police that unknown thieves had stolen gold jewellery belonging to her and her mother-in-law, valued at approximately Rs 8 lakh, from her flat. At that time, the police registered a case and conducted initial investigations, questioning domestic helps working at both the complainant's flat and her in-laws' residence, which is located in the same building. However, these inquiries yielded no concrete leads.
The situation escalated on February 4 of this year when the victim discovered that additional gold jewellery, worth Rs 11 lakh, had gone missing from cupboards within her flat. She promptly lodged a second complaint with the Kothrud police on Wednesday of this week, bringing the total estimated loss to Rs 19 lakh.
Investigation Breakthrough and Arrest
Upon receiving the second complaint, police officers revisited the case with renewed vigor. They meticulously examined CCTV footage from the building and re-interviewed the domestic staff. A crucial breakthrough came when the complainant's 10-year-old son provided a key piece of information. He revealed that their neighbor had visited their flat on February 4 to borrow a mobile phone charger and had entered his mother's bedroom during the visit.
Acting on this tip, the police scrutinized the CCTV recordings more closely and confirmed the neighbor's presence in the flat on the day of the second theft. The 40-year-old woman was subsequently taken into custody. During sustained questioning, she confessed to committing both thefts—first in October and again in February—from her neighbor's residence.
The accused admitted to selling the stolen jewellery and using the proceeds to settle her outstanding debts. The Kothrud police have stated that their investigations into the matter are ongoing to uncover any further details or potential accomplices.
