Punjab's Anti-Gangster Helpline Sees Overwhelming Public Response with 590 Tips

In a significant development for law enforcement in Punjab, the dedicated Anti-Gangster Helpline 93946-93946 has garnered a total of 590 inputs since its launch on January 21 as part of the 'Gangstran Te Vaar' campaign. Deputy Inspector General Gurmeet Singh Chauhan of the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) announced this milestone on Friday, describing it as a testament to the overwhelming support from the general public.

Breakdown of Helpline Inputs and Law Enforcement Actions

Of the 590 inputs received, the helpline has categorized them into various criminal activities. Specifically, 83 tips were related to drugs, 35 to extortion, 43 regarding gangsters, 86 concerning illegal weapons, 74 related to personal enmity, 13 for robbery or theft, 11 regarding Proclaimed Offenders or absconders, and two related to immigration fraud. An additional 97 inputs fell under the 'others' category, as detailed in a written statement by DIG Chauhan.

The proactive participation of citizens has yielded tangible results, leading to the registration of 63 First Information Reports (FIRs) and the arrest of 26 individuals. Among those arrested, 21 were placed under preventive detention, underscoring the effectiveness of public cooperation in curbing gangster activities.

Public Urged to Act as 'Eyes and Ears' of Police

DIG Chauhan has urged the public to maximize the use of the helpline, encouraging citizens to serve as the eyes and ears of the police. He emphasized that the helpline is not limited to reporting extortions but can be used to report any suspicious gangster, criminal, or anti-social activities. Chauhan assured the public that complete confidentiality will be maintained to protect informants and foster trust.

In his appeal, Chauhan also cautioned against anti-social elements operating from abroad who lure innocent youth with meager amounts of money to commit crimes. He advised the public to avoid facilitating financial transactions via UPI or other digital sources for unknown persons and warned against picking up or dropping packages from unidentified locations. Criminals abroad are reportedly using dead letter boxes to deliver weapon consignments for illegal activities, highlighting the need for vigilance.

Social Media Monitoring and Extradition Efforts

The AGTF is launching a special campaign to monitor mischievous activities on social media platforms. Chauhan revealed that 643 pages have already been blocked across various social media platforms for glorifying weapons or criminal activities. He appealed to parents to remain vigilant about their children's online activities to prevent them from being misled by such content.

Notably, the Punjab Police have identified 61 foreign-based gangsters operating from abroad. To expedite their extradition, an Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell has been established. This initiative aims to ensure that these criminals are brought back to India to face legal consequences, strengthening the state's efforts against transnational gangster networks.

AGTF's Broader Achievements in Combating Gangsterism

Since April 2022, the AGTF has made substantial progress in dismantling gangster networks across Punjab. According to DIG Chauhan, the task force has busted 1,111 gangster or criminal modules and arrested 2,868 gangsters statewide. Additionally, law enforcement has recovered 2,273 weapons and 656 vehicles used in criminal activities, showcasing a comprehensive approach to disrupting gangster operations and enhancing public safety.
