Punjab Vigilance Bureau Nabs ASI in Bribery Sting Operation in Mohali
In a significant crackdown on corruption within the police force, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) has arrested Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Jasvir Singh. The arrest occurred while the officer, posted at the Sadar Police Station in Kharar, Mohali district, was allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000.
Complaint Leads to Vigilance Action
According to an official spokesperson for the Vigilance Bureau, the arrest was made based on a formal complaint lodged by a resident of Sector 127 in Mohali. The complainant had previously registered an assault case against an individual named Suman Lata, with ASI Jasvir Singh serving as the investigating officer for this matter.
The situation escalated when the victim approached the ASI to file a challan in court, a standard procedural step in the legal process. It is alleged that at this juncture, Jasvir Singh demanded a bribe of Rs 20,000 to expedite or facilitate the filing of the court document.
Recorded Evidence and Trap Laid
Displaying remarkable presence of mind, the complainant recorded the conversation in which the bribe demand was made. This recorded evidence was then presented to the Vigilance Bureau, prompting an immediate preliminary inquiry. Upon verifying the allegations, a specialized VB team orchestrated a meticulously planned trap operation.
The sting was executed with precision. The team, accompanied by two official witnesses, apprehended ASI Jasvir Singh red-handed while he was in the act of accepting Rs 15,000 from the complainant. The amount was reportedly a negotiated sum from the initial Rs 20,000 demand.
Legal Proceedings Initiated
Following the arrest, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau has registered a formal case against the accused police officer under the stringent provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The case has been filed at the Vigilance Bureau police station in Mohali, marking a serious legal step against the alleged misconduct.
Authorities have confirmed that further investigation into the matter is actively ongoing. This case highlights the ongoing efforts by the Vigilance Bureau to root out corruption and uphold integrity within public institutions, particularly in law enforcement agencies across Punjab.
