The Vigilance Bureau (VB) of Punjab has arrested an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Punjab Police on charges of accepting a bribe of Rs 1.30 lakh. The accused officer, identified as ASI Gurjeet Singh, was posted with the CIA Wing at the time of the incident.

Details of the Bribery Case

According to officials, the complainant, a resident of Naurang Ke Siyal village in Ferozepur district named Bohra, had been booked in a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act last month. ASI Gurjeet Singh allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 2.50 lakh in exchange for removing the complainant's name from the First Information Report (FIR). After negotiations, the amount was reportedly settled at Rs 2.30 lakh. The complainant had already paid an advance of Rs 1 lakh to the ASI.

Vigilance Bureau's Operation

Following a preliminary inquiry into the complaint, a team from the Vigilance Bureau laid a trap to catch the accused red-handed. The operation led to the arrest of ASI Gurjeet Singh while he was allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1.30 lakh from the complainant. The transaction took place in the presence of two official witnesses, as per VB officials.

Legal Action and Investigation

A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the accused at the Vigilance Bureau police station in Mohali. The authorities have initiated a thorough investigation into the matter, and further proceedings are underway.
