Punjab Police Freeze Over Rs 600 Crore in Drug Trafficker Properties in Two Years
The Punjab Police announced on Monday that they have frozen more than Rs 600 crore worth of illegally acquired properties linked to drug traffickers over the past two years. In a written statement to the media, an official police spokesperson highlighted that this aggressive action represents a major shift in enforcement strategy, moving beyond arrests and narcotics seizures to systematically target the financial backbone of the drug trade.
Significant Contribution to National Efforts
The spokesperson stated, "Impressively, Punjab accounted for 50% of all properties frozen in 2024 in drug cases in the country." This underscores the state's leading role in combating drug-related crimes through financial means. By focusing on confiscating assets, the police aim to hit traffickers where it hurts most, disrupting the economic infrastructure that sustains illegal operations.
Accelerated Pace of Asset Freezing
The pace of property freezing has accelerated significantly in recent years. According to the spokesperson, assets worth approximately Rs 330 crore were frozen in 2024, while properties valued at around Rs 270 crore were frozen in 2025. Cumulatively, over Rs 600 crore worth of illegal properties of drug smugglers were frozen in the last two years alone. This accounts for more than half of the nearly Rs 1,000 crore worth of assets frozen since 2017, demonstrating a sustained and intensified effort.
Strategic Shift in Anti-Drug Enforcement
The spokesperson elaborated on the strategy, saying, "We are following what is amongst India's most aggressive and financially intelligent anti-drug enforcement models. When traffickers realise that their properties, land and wealth can be confiscated, the economic foundation of the drug trade begins to collapse. Economic disruption and financial warfare against drug trafficking is therefore a central pillar of Punjab Police's anti-drug strategy." This approach marks a departure from earlier methods where, even after arrests, properties often remained untouched, allowing networks to regroup through associates or family members.
Ensuring Long-Term Impact
By aggressively freezing such assets, the Punjab Police are ensuring that illegal gains cannot be protected or passed on within the ecosystem of the drug trade. The spokesperson added, "Financial investigation and forfeiture/freezing of properties and assets are our core strategy." This focus on dismantling the economic support systems aims to prevent the resurgence of trafficking networks and create a more lasting impact on public safety and law enforcement in the region.
