Punjab Police's 'Gangstran Te Vaar' Operation: Massive Crackdown on Gangster Networks
In a significant statewide effort to dismantle criminal syndicates, Punjab Police has executed an extensive operation titled 'Gangstran Te Vaar', resulting in a staggering number of raids and arrests. According to DGP Gaurav Yadav, the drive, which commenced on January 20, has seen 62,302 raids conducted up to April 19, leading to the apprehension of 915 proclaimed offenders. This coordinated initiative targets not only gangsters but also their logistical, financial, and communication infrastructures, aiming to root out networks operating both within India and internationally.
Arrests and Detentions in the Operation
The police have made a total of 22,605 arrests during this period. This includes 461 gangster associates and 22,144 wanted individuals. Additionally, 10,254 people were detained under preventive measures, while 16,439 were verified and released. Overall, the operation has accounted for 49,298 individuals, highlighting its comprehensive scope in addressing criminal elements across the state.
Significant Recoveries from the Crackdown
The crackdown has yielded substantial recoveries of weapons and contraband. Police have seized:
- 408 firearms, 148 sharp-edged weapons, 1,197 rounds of ammunition, 122 magazines, 2.5 kg explosives, and six hand grenades.
- Large quantities of drugs, including 378.5 kg heroin, 301.9 kg opium, 2,838.8 kg poppy husk, over 12.4 lakh intoxicant tablets, 7,373.8gm powder, 101.5 kg ganja, and 790gm 'Ice'.
- Financial assets such as Rs 1 crore in drug money, Rs 50.7 lakh in cash, and 273 gm of gold.
- Other items include 24,520.2 litres of illicit liquor, 4,229 mobile phones, 815 vehicles, and 31 drones used by criminal networks.
