Dhanbad: The cancellation of the invitation to Dhanbad mayor Sanjeev Singh for the flag-off ceremony of the Dhanbad-Mumbai weekly train on April 8 was due to concerns over passenger convenience and security, according to a Right to Information (RTI) reply by the railways. The reply was given in response to a query from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Mukesh Pandey.
Flag-Off Ceremony and Absence of Dignitaries
The train was flagged off by Dhanbad BJP Member of Parliament (MP) Dulu Mahto. However, the conspicuous absence of mayor Sanjeev Singh and his wife, Jharia MLA Ragini Singh, from the ceremony sparked reactions and raised questions among political circles and the public.
Railways' Explanation
The railways stated that intelligence inputs indicated a large number of supporters were likely to accompany the mayor to the venue. To avoid any untoward incident or disruption to passenger services, discussions were held with all dignitaries, except the MP and MLA. Those consulted agreed not to attend the event. Subsequently, a letter cancelling the invitation was issued “under the orders of the competent authority.” Two railway officials later visited Singh’s residence and expressed regret over the incident.
Political Reaction
Mukesh Pandey questioned how a junior railway official could cancel an invitation issued by senior authorities, calling the move “against established rules.” He stated that he would raise the matter before the railway ministry, demanding an explanation and accountability for the decision.
