Rajkot Anti-Corruption Bureau Busts Bribery Racket Involving Retired Tax Official

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Rajkot has taken decisive action against corruption by registering a formal case against three individuals, including a retired income tax inspector, for their alleged involvement in a bribery scheme related to clearing arrears bills.

Arrests Made in Coordinated Operation

In a significant development, two of the accused have been apprehended by ACB officials. The arrested individuals are Ravi Kumar Jangid (38), who served as an assistant accounts officer at the finance ministry's Zonal Accounts Office, and Akshay Vagadia (33), employed as a contingent peon at the income tax office. Their arrest marks a crucial step in the ongoing investigation into this corruption scandal.

Details of the Alleged Bribery Scheme

According to ACB officials, the accused allegedly demanded a substantial bribe amounting to 20% of an arrears bill totaling Rs 4 lakh. This initial demand translated to approximately Rs 80,000. Following negotiations between the parties involved, the bribe amount was reportedly settled at Rs 50,000, with Rs 5,000 paid upfront as an advance payment.

The complainant, demonstrating civic responsibility, approached the Anti-Corruption Bureau before proceeding to pay the remaining Rs 45,000. This proactive approach enabled authorities to plan and execute a carefully coordinated trap operation.

Successful Trap Operation on January 30

ACB officials laid a meticulous trap on January 30, strategically positioning themselves opposite the income tax office in Rajkot. During the operation, Ravi Kumar Jangid was apprehended after engaging in a conversation with retired inspector Shailesh Chauhan, who is alleged to have arranged the bribery transaction. Subsequently, Akshay Vagadia was caught red-handed while accepting the remaining Rs 45,000.

Search for Retired Inspector Continues

The Anti-Corruption Bureau is currently conducting an intensive search for Shailesh Chauhan, the retired income tax inspector implicated in this case. Chauhan, a resident of Bhuj, retired approximately two years ago after completing his service tenure in Rajkot. His alleged involvement as the arranger of the bribe has made him a key person of interest in this investigation.

This case highlights the ongoing efforts by anti-corruption agencies to combat financial misconduct within government departments and serves as a reminder of the consequences facing those who attempt to exploit their positions for personal gain.
