Rajkot Labourer Fatally Attacked Over Unpaid Loan; Two Suspects Arrested
A tragic incident unfolded on the Rajkot–Porbandar National Highway near the Jamkandorna bridge on Saturday evening, resulting in the death of a 28-year-old man following a violent altercation allegedly stemming from a financial dispute. The victim, identified as Himalay Baraiya, succumbed to severe injuries inflicted by a sharp weapon during the confrontation.
Details of the Fatal Assault
According to a formal complaint filed at the Dhoraji taluka police station by the victim's uncle, Paresh Baraiya, the family owed a sum of Rs 4.08 lakh to PR Angadia, a business entity owned by Bhagirathsinh Jethwa. Earlier on the day of the incident, a partial payment of Rs 70,000 was made, with assurances that the remaining balance would be settled by Monday. However, tensions escalated when Jethwa reportedly issued threats regarding the outstanding dues.
Later that evening, Paresh's son, Vivek, informed his father that he had been assaulted by Bhagirathsinh Jethwa, Mahidipsinh Jethwa, and two other unidentified individuals while walking near the ITI on the highway. Upon receiving this distressing news, Paresh, accompanied by his brother Keshav and nephew Himalay, rushed to the location.
Violent Confrontation and Fatal Outcome
During the ensuing confrontation, the situation turned deadly. Bhagirathsinh Jethwa allegedly attacked Himalay Baraiya with an iron axe, while Mahidipsinh Jethwa assaulted other family members with a stick. The assailants then fled the scene in a vehicle, leaving behind a critically injured Himalay.
Himalay, who worked as a labourer, was initially taken to Dhoraji Government Hospital for emergency treatment. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was subsequently referred to Junagadh Government Hospital, where medical professionals declared him dead upon arrival. Vivek also sustained injuries during the attack and received medical attention.
Police Investigation and Arrests
Investigating officer J P Gosai confirmed that the violent episode was captured on CCTV cameras installed in the vicinity, and authorities are in the process of seizing the footage as crucial evidence for the ongoing investigation. "The primary accused individuals were apprehended within hours of the attack, and intensive efforts are underway to locate the remaining suspects and recover the weapons used in the assault," stated Gosai.
Police have arrested two persons directly linked to the case, while a manhunt continues for two other individuals believed to be involved. The swift police action highlights the seriousness with which law enforcement is treating this violent crime, which has shocked the local community in Rajkot.
