A routine Friday morning turned tragic in Rajkot when a 40-year-old woman was brutally murdered by her husband, who suspected her of having an extramarital affair. The accused, Altaf Lalani, allegedly attacked his wife Shilpa with a hammer following a heated argument.
Details of the Incident
The crime took place at Shivalik Building near Raiya Telephone Exchange. According to police, Altaf had long harbored suspicions about his wife’s fidelity. On the day of the incident, he left home early to open his grocery store in Raiyadhar and returned around 10 am. Soon after, an argument erupted between the couple.
During the altercation, Altaf allegedly told Shilpa that a woman named Bhanu, wife of a man named Jitu, had visited his shop and complained that Shilpa was messaging her husband. This accusation fueled the confrontation.
The Attack
In a fit of rage, Altaf struck Shilpa on the head with a hammer, causing fatal injuries. He then fled the scene. Shilpa’s niece, Nayab Jivani, who was present in the house at the time, raised the alarm. She informed relatives and rushed Shilpa to Civil Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Background of the Couple
Shilpa, originally from Porbandar, had been married to Altaf for 22 years. The couple had two children: a daughter who works in Ahmedabad and a son studying in Mumbai. Police have registered a case and are investigating the matter further.
