Rajkot Nurse Allegedly Raped by Employer; Accused Arrested Under Multiple Acts
In a disturbing incident from Rajkot district, a 22-year-old woman working as a nurse has alleged that she was raped by a man who had employed her at the civil hospital in Upleta town. The accused, identified as Uday Panera, has been arrested and booked under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and the Information Technology (IT) Act.
Details of the Alleged Crime
According to the police complaint, the incident occurred on the night of February 26. Panera contacted the victim via WhatsApp, asking her to meet him at a location in Upleta. He then allegedly took her on his motorcycle to his farm, where he sexually assaulted her. During this time, he is accused of creating a fake ID on Snapchat without her knowledge and threatening to terminate her employment if she reported the incident.
Background and Employment Arrangement
Police sources reveal that the woman was actively seeking employment and had discussed this with a friend, who subsequently spoke to Panera. He arranged for her to be employed on a contractual basis at the civil hospital, leveraging this position to allegedly commit the crime and exert control over her.
Police Action and Investigation
Deputy Superintendent of Police S S Patel of the Rajkot Rural SC/ST Cell confirmed that the accused was arrested immediately after the complaint was registered at the Upleta police station. He has been sent to judicial custody. Patel stated, "We have seized his mobile phone, the bike used in the crime, and clothing of both the victim and accused. Medical examinations of both individuals have also been conducted." The investigation is ongoing, with authorities focusing on digital evidence from the fake Snapchat ID and other forensic details.
Legal Implications and Community Impact
This case highlights serious concerns about workplace safety and exploitation, particularly in contractual employment settings. The application of the BNS, Atrocities Act, and IT Act underscores the multifaceted nature of the crime, involving sexual violence, caste-based discrimination, and cyber threats. The local community in Rajkot has expressed shock, calling for stricter measures to protect vulnerable workers from such predatory behavior.
