Rajkot Police Uncover Major Counterfeit Pesticide Manufacturing Racket
In a significant crackdown on agricultural fraud, the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Rajkot Rural Police has dismantled a sophisticated racket involved in the production and sale of counterfeit pesticides. The operation, conducted across multiple locations in Lodhika taluka, resulted in the seizure of stock valued at over Rs 25 lakh and the arrest of four individuals linked to the illicit trade.
Multi-Village Raids Lead to Major Bust
Police teams carried out coordinated raids at manufacturing units located in Makhavad, Virva, and Ravki villages. These facilities were allegedly engaged in the unauthorized production of pesticides, which were then marketed as branded products from a leading Indian multinational agrochemical company. The raids uncovered a well-organized operation that had been evading regulatory scrutiny.
Rajkot DSP Vijaysinh Gurjar provided details of the investigation, stating that the units were found to be copying patented formulations and mixing chemicals at their own facilities. The counterfeit products were then sold in the market under deceptively similar brand names, misleading farmers and agricultural businesses.
Detailed Breakdown of Seizures and Arrests
The police action yielded substantial evidence across three primary locations:
- Shakti Chemicals in Virva: Raids at this facility revealed counterfeit pesticides being manufactured under the brand name of a prominent agrochemical company. Stock worth Rs 14 lakh was seized from the unit. A case has been registered against Dhaval Korat (28), a science graduate from Rajkot.
- Green Bharat Chemicals in Ravki: Investigations at this location led to the recovery of counterfeit pesticides bearing the name of the targeted company. Two individuals—Sahil Timbadiya (30) and Kashyap Akoliya (35), both residents of Rajkot—have been booked under the Copyright Act. Notably, Sahil has a previous case for a similar offense lodged at Shapar-Veraval police station.
- Adikon Pesticides Pvt Ltd in Makhavad: Another raid at this village-based company resulted in the seizure of stock valued at Rs 1.95 lakh. A case has been registered against Dhruv Patoliya (27) in connection with the illegal activities.
Modus Operandi and Agricultural Impact
The investigation has revealed that the accused were systematically copying patented pesticide formulations. They would mix chemicals at their own unlicensed facilities and package the products to closely resemble those of established brands. These counterfeit pesticides were primarily used for weed control and for combating pests affecting crucial crops such as groundnut and cotton.
Preliminary inquiries indicate that the racket had been operational for approximately one-and-a-half years. The accused were distributing their products through both online platforms and traditional distributor networks. Police suspect that the businesses generated annual turnovers running into several crores, highlighting the scale of the illegal operation.
Legal Proceedings and Future Actions
Separate complaints have been registered at Lodhika police station under both the Copyright Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Samples of the seized pesticides will be sent to a laboratory in Gandhinagar for comprehensive analysis. Based on the forensic report, additional charges may be filed against the accused.
This crackdown represents a crucial step in protecting farmers from substandard agricultural inputs that could compromise crop yields and soil health. The Rajkot Police have emphasized their commitment to continuing such operations to safeguard the agricultural sector from fraudulent practices.
