Rajkot Father Files Police Complaint After Son's Alleged Suicide

A tragic incident in Rajkot has led to a police case after a 38-year-old man allegedly died by suicide at his residence on Nana Mauva Main Road. The victim, identified as Vishwajitsinh Rajput, was found dead on February 9, prompting his 62-year-old father to file a formal complaint at the Malaviya Nagar police station on Thursday.

Police Register Case Under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita

Following the father's detailed complaint, authorities have taken swift action by registering a case of abetment of suicide. The charges have been filed against Rajput's wife, Aarti Vaghela, and his mother-in-law, Jyoti Vaghela, under Section 108 of the newly implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. This legal move underscores the serious nature of the allegations in this distressing family dispute.

Allegations of Harassment and Property Demands

In his complaint, the father, Rajendrasinh, outlined a troubling sequence of events that began after his son's marriage to Aarti Vaghela on April 29, 2024. Initially, Vishwajitsinh lived as a 'ghar jamai' at his wife's parental home, a traditional arrangement where the husband resides with the wife's family. However, the situation deteriorated rapidly within months.

The complaint alleges that about four months post-wedding, Aarti and her mother started exerting pressure on Vishwajitsinh. They reportedly demanded money and insisted on a share in his father's property. When Vishwajitsinh refused to comply with these demands, the situation escalated significantly.

Escalation to Assault and Continued Harassment

The harassment allegedly turned physical and psychological, with claims of assault and mental torment that forced Vishwajitsinh to leave his wife's home and return to his parents. Despite this move, the complaint states that the harassment did not cease. The mother and daughter are accused of continuing their demands, now asking for a substantial sum of Rs 40 lakh for a divorce settlement.

Furthermore, the family alleges that threats were made to frame Vishwajitsinh in false cases if he failed to pay the demanded amount. This included complaints filed against him at a Women's police station and under the Atrocities Act, which his family asserts caused him immense mental stress and anguish over time.

Suicide Note Points to Culpability

Adding a critical layer to the investigation, police officials have confirmed that a suicide note was recovered from the scene. This note reportedly places direct blame on his wife and mother-in-law for his death, citing the ongoing harassment and pressure as contributing factors. The note's contents have been instrumental in shaping the police's response and the subsequent legal charges.

The case highlights severe issues of domestic pressure, financial exploitation, and mental health crises within family dynamics. Authorities are continuing their investigation to gather more evidence and statements from all involved parties. The community in Rajkot has been shaken by this incident, raising concerns about similar hidden struggles in households across the region.
