Ranchi Police Busts Major Narcotics Racket, Arrests Suspect from Residence
In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Ranchi police have apprehended a 41-year-old man for allegedly operating a narcotics racket directly from his home. The arrest was made on Wednesday, marking a crucial step in the city's ongoing efforts to combat illegal drug activities.
Details of the Arrest and Raid
Krishna Kumar Mahato was taken into custody from his residence located in the Bhagalpur Lawatu Tola area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Pundag police outpost in Ranchi. Acting on a reliable tip-off, law enforcement officials conducted a targeted raid on Wednesday, leading to the discovery of substantial evidence.
During the operation, police recovered 253 packets of brown sugar, with a total weight of 27.74 grams. The estimated market value of the seized narcotics is approximately Rs 55 lakh, highlighting the scale of the illicit operation. In addition to the drugs, authorities confiscated a mobile phone, Rs 4,600 in cash, and a weighing machine from Mahato's home, further implicating him in the trafficking activities.
Police Investigation and Statements
Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police (SP) Paras Rana provided insights into the case on Thursday, emphasizing that Mahato had been under surveillance for some time. "Police had information about Mahato selling brown sugar in the SAIL township area for quite some time now. He was mainly active in the Pundag area," Rana stated.
During interrogation, Mahato reportedly disclosed the identity of a supplier from whom he procured the brown sugar before distributing it to consumers. "We are trying to trace and nab the person," Rana added, indicating that the investigation is ongoing to dismantle the broader network involved in this narcotics trade.
Legal Actions and Custody
A formal case has been registered against Mahato under the stringent Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Following his arrest, he has been remanded to judicial custody, pending further legal proceedings. This arrest underscores the police's commitment to tackling drug-related crimes in the region and serves as a warning to others engaged in similar illegal activities.
