Ranchi Police Crack Down on Major Drug Network with 330 Kg Poppy Bulb Seizure

In a significant operation against narcotics trafficking, police in Ranchi have apprehended two brothers allegedly involved in a large-scale illegal drug trade. The raid, conducted at Nauddhi village under the Arki police station limits of Khunti district, resulted in the seizure of approximately 330 kilograms of poppy plant bulbs, officials confirmed on Thursday.

Massive Haul Valued at Nearly Rs 50 Lakh

The confiscated illegal poppy bulbs have an estimated market value of Rs 49.53 lakh, highlighting the substantial scale of this illicit operation. This seizure represents a major blow to drug trafficking activities in the region, disrupting the supply chain of narcotics derived from poppy plants.

Arrests and Investigation Details

Khunti sub-divisional police officer Varun Rajak identified the arrested individuals as Ankit Hajam and Lalu Hajam, both residents of Nauddhi village. According to police statements, the accused had procured the poppy bulbs from illegal growers operating in nearby villages.

"The apprehended persons are Ankit Hajam and Lalu Hajam, both residents of Nauddhi village," stated Varun Rajak. "The accused had purchased the materials from the illegal poppy growers of nearby villages. Police are also trying to gather information regarding their wider network during investigation."

Police Operation Based on Specific Intelligence

The successful raid was initiated after Khunti Superintendent of Police Manish Toppo received credible intelligence about a large stockpile of poppy bulbs being stored at the residence of Ankit and Lalu Hajam. Acting swiftly on this tip-off, a police team led by local police station in-charge Praveen Kumar Tiwari conducted the operation, resulting in the significant seizure.

During interrogation, both accused individuals reportedly admitted their involvement in the trade of poppy bulbs, confirming their role in this illegal enterprise. The police have registered a formal case against the brothers under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, ensuring legal proceedings will follow.

Broader Implications and Ongoing Probe

This operation not only removes a substantial quantity of illegal narcotics from circulation but also exposes the network connecting growers to distributors. Authorities are now focused on uncovering the broader connections of this drug trade, including identifying other participants in the supply chain and potential distribution channels.

The seizure of 330 kilograms of poppy bulbs represents one of the more substantial drug busts in the region recently, demonstrating law enforcement's continued vigilance against narcotics trafficking. The case underscores the ongoing challenges of combating drug trade in rural areas and the importance of community intelligence in such operations.
