Open Garbage Dump Sparks Outrage in Ranjit Avenue
Residents of Ranjit Avenue in Amritsar have raised serious concerns over an open garbage dumping site located near the entrance of A Block, close to Red Cross Bhawan, the IGP Mess, and the road leading to the historic Gurdwara Chhevin Patshahi. They allege that the situation reflects the failure of the Municipal Corporation and the Amritsar Improvement Trust to uphold their claims of maintaining cleanliness in the city.
According to residents, a large open plot in the area has been turned into an unofficial dumping ground where tree branches, dry leaves, construction waste, and other garbage from nearby areas are regularly disposed of. The site is situated next to Red Cross Bhawan and lies on a route frequently used by devotees visiting Gurdwara Chhevin Patshahi.
Rains Worsen Unhygienic Conditions
The recent rains have further aggravated the problem, with water accumulating around the dumping site, resulting in foul odour and unhygienic conditions in the surrounding area. Residents say the stagnant water has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, raising health concerns.
Social activist Pawan Sharma alleged that despite Amritsar’s religious and historical importance, civic agencies have failed to effectively address the issue of garbage dumping at various locations across the city. He said that the presence of such a dumping site just a few metres away from the MC headquarters highlights the gap between official claims and the actual situation on the ground.
Activist Witnesses Municipal Dumping
Sharma further alleged that when he visited the site on Monday, a Municipal Corporation garbage truck and a JCB machine arrived there to dump additional waste. However, he claimed that the drivers left the spot after noticing his presence. This incident, he said, underscores the complicity of civic authorities in perpetuating the problem.
Residents of Ranjit Avenue have demanded the immediate removal of the garbage dump, regular cleaning of the area, and strict measures to prevent the open plot from being misused as an illegal dumping ground. They also urged the Municipal Corporation and the Improvement Trust to strengthen sanitation arrangements and ensure proper waste management in residential areas.
