Landslide Warnings Issued for 39 Gram Panchayats, 93 Villages
The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) has issued landslide warnings for 39 gram panchayats and 93 villages in the Western Ghats region. The warnings come as heavy rainfall continues to lash the area, increasing the risk of slope failures.
Increasing Landslide Incidents in Karnataka
Over the past 15 years, Karnataka has experienced a notable rise in landslide incidents and fatalities. Since 2006, the state has recorded more than 1,450 landslides, resulting in over 100 deaths. The Western Ghats, known for its steep terrain and heavy monsoon rains, is particularly vulnerable.
KSNDMC Monitoring and Advisory
KSNDMC officials stated that they are closely monitoring the situation using real-time data from rain gauges and satellite imagery. Residents in the affected areas have been advised to stay alert and follow evacuation orders if issued. According to a KSNDMC spokesperson, “The warnings are based on current rainfall patterns and soil saturation levels. People in these regions should avoid unnecessary travel and stay in safe locations.”
