A 28-year-old rape survivor attempted self-immolation outside the office of the Commissioner of Police in Gurugram on Tuesday, alleging police inaction and demanding justice. The woman, a resident of nearby Palam Vihar, poured kerosene on herself and tried to set herself ablaze around 11:30 am, but was immediately rescued by bystanders and police personnel. She was rushed to a nearby hospital with minor burns on her arms and legs. Her condition is reported to be stable.

The survivor had filed a complaint of rape against a man in March 2024 at the Palam Vihar police station. She alleged that despite repeated follow-ups, no action was taken against the accused. In her statement to the media from the hospital, she said, "Death is the only way out. No one is listening to me. The police have been ignoring my complaint for months. I have no hope left."
Police Response
Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Balbir Singh said that an FIR was registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, and the accused was arrested in April. However, the survivor claimed that the accused was released on bail soon after and continued to harass her. The police have now registered a case of attempt to suicide and are investigating the matter. A senior officer said, "We are looking into the allegations of inaction. The survivor's safety and well-being are our priority."

The incident has sparked outrage among local activists and women's rights groups. A protest was held outside the police station demanding strict action against the accused and accountability for police negligence. One activist said, "It is shameful that a rape survivor has to resort to such extreme measures to be heard. The system has failed her."
