A record-breaking surge in the number of pilgrims undertaking the annual Amarnath Yatra has placed significant strain on administrative and security arrangements in Jammu and Kashmir. The rush comes as the sacred ice lingam, known as Baba Barfani, has vanished earlier than usual, adding to the challenges faced by authorities.
Unprecedented Pilgrim Numbers
According to officials, over 3.5 lakh devotees have visited the shrine in the first two weeks of the yatra, marking a historic high. The previous record for the same period was around 2.8 lakh in 2019. This year's numbers have exceeded all expectations, with daily footfall often crossing 25,000.
“The rush is unprecedented. We are managing but the pressure on resources is immense,” said a senior official from the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB). The surge has led to long queues and extended waiting times at the base camps and along the route.
Early Disappearance of Ice Lingam
Adding to the concerns, the naturally formed ice lingam, which symbolizes Lord Shiva, has melted away much earlier than its usual mid-August disappearance. Devotees were left disappointed as the lingam vanished by the end of July. “It is a matter of deep sorrow. The lingam is the center of faith for millions,” said a priest at the cave shrine.
Environmental factors, including rising temperatures and increased carbon dioxide levels from the large number of pilgrims, are believed to have contributed to the early melting. Experts have warned that the fragile ecosystem of the cave is under threat.
Authorities Under Pressure
The administration has ramped up efforts to manage the crowd. Additional medical camps, sanitation facilities, and security personnel have been deployed. However, reports of inadequate facilities and long waiting times persist. “We are doing our best to ensure a smooth yatra, but the numbers are overwhelming,” said a district magistrate.
The yatra, which began on July 1, is scheduled to continue until August 15. Authorities are urging pilgrims to register online and follow guidelines to avoid inconvenience. The situation remains tense as the peak season approaches.
