A 66-year-old retired Army Havildar, Surinder Singh, allegedly shot dead his 38-year-old son Gursharan Singh after a heated argument over his relationship with a woman in Punjab’s New Agar Nagar area, police said on Monday. Surinder later died by suicide after consuming a poisonous substance.
Background of the Dispute
Surinder Singh, a widower, was in a relationship with a woman and reportedly wanted to marry her. However, his son Gursharan Singh strongly opposed the relationship. According to neighbours, the father and son frequently quarrelled over this issue.
The Incident
On Sunday night, the argument escalated. Surinder allegedly took out his licensed 12-bore double-barrel gun, prompting Gursharan to run out of the house to save himself. Surinder chased him and opened fire, killing Gursharan on the spot.
After the shooting, Surinder returned home and consumed a poisonous substance. He was rushed to the Civil Hospital but died during treatment.
Police Investigation
Police have sent the bodies for post-mortem examination and seized the weapon used in the crime. Further investigation is underway. Gursharan was unmarried, and his two sisters, who live in England and Canada, have been informed about the incident. Surinder had been working as a security guard at a bank in the area.
This tragic incident highlights the consequences of unresolved family disputes and the need for conflict resolution mechanisms.
