Guwahati: A retired Assam Police Service (APS) officer succumbed to injuries after being assaulted by his neighbor following a minor dispute in the Ghoramara area under Basistha Police Station in Guwahati. Police confirmed that the accused was arrested in the early hours of Monday from Jorhat.
Incident Details
Kapil Pathak, Officer-in-Charge of Basistha Police Station, identified the deceased as Girin Chandra Deka and the accused as Sanjit Boro. “The incident occurred on May 15 after a minor accident involving a car dent reportedly led to an altercation between Deka and Boro, who were neighbors,” Pathak stated.
The argument escalated into a physical confrontation during which Boro allegedly assaulted Deka, leaving him grievously injured. Deka was rushed to a private hospital, where he remained under treatment for nine days before succumbing to his injuries. His body was sent to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for a post-mortem examination.
Legal Proceedings
“His family members filed an FIR, which was registered at Basistha Police Station on May 19, and an investigation was initiated accordingly. The accused fled to Jorhat immediately after the incident and went into hiding there in an attempt to evade arrest,” Pathak said.
Police tracked Boro’s movements based on specific intelligence inputs and arrested him in Jorhat early Monday. He was subsequently brought to Guwahati for legal proceedings. “A case has been registered under section 103 (1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Act. He was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate court on Monday,” the officer added.

According to reports, Deka began his career as a sub-inspector in Assam Police and rose through departmental promotions before being inducted into the APS. He later served as the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Hojai district before retiring.
