In a shocking incident aboard a busy intercity train, a 77-year-old retired police inspector was assaulted and robbed by a fellow passenger. The Rajkot Railway police acted swiftly, arresting the accused within hours of the crime on Wednesday.
Violent Assault on a Moving Train
The victim, identified as Dharmendrasinh Jadeja, a resident of Tejprakash Society in Jamnagar, was travelling from Jamnagar to Ahmedabad to attend a court hearing. He boarded the Jamnagar–Vadodara Intercity Express at Jamnagar Railway Station around 4:45 am and was seated in the rear general compartment.
The situation turned violent after the train departed from Hapa Railway Station. The accused, Nishad Singh, approached Jadeja and requested to use his mobile phone. When the elderly retired inspector refused and suggested he ask another passenger, Singh allegedly became aggressive.
"The accused verbally abused the victim, then snatched two mobile phones from his hands before assaulting him," a police official stated. In a brutal escalation, Singh reportedly pushed Jadeja to the floor of the coach and struck him on the forehead with a small fire extinguisher kept inside the compartment.
Swift Police Action Leads to Arrest
Several alert passengers witnessed the assault and raised an alarm. This immediate response prompted the railway police to launch a search operation for the attacker. Demonstrating efficient coordination, the police tracked down and arrested Nishad Singh within a few hours of the incident.
At the time of his arrest, Singh, a native of Punjab, was found in possession of both stolen mobile phones, which were successfully recovered by the police. The injured Dharmendrasinh Jadeja was provided medical aid and later admitted to the civil hospital in Rajkot for treatment.
Background of Accused and Victim Revealed
Preliminary police investigations shed light on the circumstances of both individuals. The accused, Nishad Singh, had reportedly come to Kanalus near Jamnagar in search of employment and was returning home after failing to find work.
The victim, Dharmendrasinh Jadeja, is no ordinary citizen. Police confirmed that he had earlier served with the Ahmedabad Crime Branch. His family currently resides in Ahmedabad, which was his destination for a court hearing.
The Rajkot Railway police have registered a case against Nishad Singh under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those pertaining to robbery and assault.
