Kanpur: A retired sanitation supervisor of the Kanpur Municipal Corporation and his wife were killed after a speeding truck rammed their scooty and ran them over in the Jajmau area on Saturday morning while they were on their way to Siddhnath Temple.
Victims Identified
The deceased were identified as Laxmikant Sharma (62) and his wife Asha Sharma (60), residents of Sitaram Nagar in the Ahirwan area. The couple is survived by two sons.
Accident Details
According to eyewitnesses, the truck struck the scooty from behind, throwing the couple onto the road before crushing them under its wheels. The impact was so severe that both died on the spot.
Public Outrage and Driver Apprehended
The accident triggered outrage among locals and passersby. The truck driver attempted to flee, but people chased the vehicle and intercepted it near Teen Khambe at Tarbagiya. They allegedly thrashed the driver before handing him over to the police.
Police Action
DCP (East) Satyajeet Gupta said the bodies have been sent for postmortem examination and the driver has been taken into custody. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway. The police are also examining CCTV footage from the area to ascertain the exact sequence of events.
The tragic incident has once again raised concerns about road safety in Kanpur. Locals have demanded strict action against the driver and better traffic management in the area to prevent such accidents in the future.
