Roorkee: Six Youths Booked for Rioting and Attempt to Murder After School Assault

In a shocking incident in Roorkee, six youths aged between 19 and 20 have been formally charged with rioting and attempt to murder. The charges stem from an alleged attack where they opened fire and assaulted two Class 12 students outside a school in Laksar. Police officials confirmed the booking on Thursday, highlighting the severity of the case which has sent ripples through the local community.

Incident Details and Suspected Motive

The assault occurred on Wednesday shortly after the two victims, who are cousins from Laksar, had completed their Class 12 board examinations and exited their examination centre. According to police reports, the accused confronted the students just outside the school premises, launching a violent attack that included firing shots during the altercation. A video capturing the incident has since circulated widely on social media platforms, amplifying public concern.

Authorities suspect that the attack was fueled by an old rivalry between the parties involved. Bystanders at the scene attempted to intervene and apprehend the attackers, but the assailants managed to escape on motorcycles, evading immediate capture.

Legal Action and Complaint

Based on a formal complaint lodged by the father of one of the assaulted students, police have registered a case against the six individuals identified as Chinki, Mehul, Kavya, Ritik, Nobil, and Piyush. The charges filed against them include sections 109 (attempt to murder), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 190 (unlawful assembly), 191(2) (rioting), 191(3) (rioting with a deadly weapon), and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The complainant detailed that one of the accused, Mehul, was previously acquainted with the victims, having studied alongside them. Approximately six months ago, a dispute had erupted between them, which was reportedly resolved with police mediation. However, Mehul allegedly returned with a group of associates, some of whom are said to have criminal backgrounds, to carry out this premeditated attack. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the gunfire during the incident.

Police Investigation and Statements

Law enforcement agencies are actively investigating the case, with efforts focused on analysing CCTV footage from the vicinity to identify any additional individuals involved in the attack. SP (Rural) SC Suyal stated, "Six persons have been named so far, and efforts are underway to identify others. Further action will be taken based on the investigation." The police are working diligently to piece together the events and ensure all perpetrators are brought to justice.

This incident underscores ongoing concerns about youth violence and safety in educational environments, prompting calls for heightened security measures and community vigilance.
