A 27-year-old man was allegedly hacked to death on Tuesday afternoon near a private school under the Sector-7 police station limits in Rourkela. Another youth sustained injuries during the attack. Police have launched a manhunt for six accused who fled the scene.
The deceased has been identified as Tofan Bindhani, a resident of Ganjampalli in Sector-6. According to police, Bindhani was sitting with three friends at an isolated spot near the school when around six youths arrived around 1:45 pm and attacked him with an axe, striking him on the neck and other parts of the body. One of his friends suffered an injury to his hand, while the other two managed to flee. The assailants escaped immediately after the attack.
Bindhani was rushed to Ispat General Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. Sector-7 police and a scientific team arrived at the crime scene and initiated an inquiry. The body has been kept at the hospital mortuary for postmortem.
Previous Altercation Suspected as Motive
Sources revealed that Bindhani had an altercation with some youths three days ago. Police suspect that this dispute may have led to the fatal attack. The motive behind the murder is still under investigation, and police are working to identify all those involved.
“The search operation to nab the absconding accused is underway,” said DSP (Zone-I) M R Pradhan. He added that multiple teams have been deployed to track down the suspects.

The incident has caused shock and concern in the local community. Police have recorded statements from the injured friend and other witnesses. Forensic experts collected evidence from the spot to aid the investigation.
