RPF Conducts Major Seizures at Chennai Railway Stations

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) has executed significant operations at two major railway stations in Chennai, resulting in the confiscation of unaccounted cash and gold bars with a combined value of ₹58.19 lakh. The seizures occurred during separate incidents at Perambur and Chennai Egmore stations, targeting passengers who failed to provide valid documentation for their possessions.

First Interception at Perambur Station

In the initial operation at Perambur railway station, RPF personnel intercepted Rupa Ram, 39, a resident of Rajasthan, as he disembarked from the Sangamitra Express. Upon searching his baggage, officials discovered ₹9.2 lakh in cash. Ram claimed the money was related to his hardware business but could not produce any supporting documents to verify this claim. Consequently, the cash was immediately confiscated by authorities.

Second Seizure at Perambur Platform

During a routine check at the same station, officials stopped Dinesh Kumar, 43, from Tirupattur district. A thorough inspection of his luggage revealed ₹6 lakh in cash along with 237 grams of gold bars, which have an estimated market value of ₹35.45 lakh. Kumar asserted that these items belonged to his jewellery shop in Tirupattur. However, he was unable to present valid documentation for either the cash or the gold, leading to the seizure of both.

Third Incident at Chennai Egmore Station

In a separate operation at Chennai Egmore railway station, an RPF team noticed a man behaving suspiciously after he disembarked from the Howrah-Kanyakumari Express. The individual, identified as Chota Ram Kadav, 25, from Jodhpur district in Rajasthan, was found to be carrying ₹7.54 lakh in cash. Similar to the other cases, Kadav lacked proper documentation for the money. The cash was subsequently handed over to the Income Tax Department for further investigation.

Total Seizures and Ongoing Investigations

The combined seizures from all three incidents amount to ₹22.74 lakh in cash and gold bars worth ₹35.45 lakh. All confiscated items have been transferred to the Income Tax Department, which will conduct a detailed inquiry into the origins and intended use of these unaccounted assets. The RPF's vigilant actions underscore their commitment to preventing illegal transportation of valuables and ensuring compliance with financial regulations within the railway network.
