In a significant pre-Christmas anti-narcotics operation, the Dima Hasao police on Thursday intercepted a massive consignment of brown sugar valued at approximately Rs 1 crore and apprehended two alleged traffickers. The bust took place at Harangajao along the crucial National Highway 27.
Operation Based on Specific Intelligence
Acting on a precise tip-off, a dedicated police team stopped a vehicle that was travelling from Silchar in the direction of Haflong. A meticulous search of the vehicle was conducted, leading to the dramatic recovery of 527.44 grams of brown sugar, which was cleverly concealed within the car's interior.
Arrests and Ongoing Investigation
The two individuals taken into custody have been identified as Zaidul Islam (30) from Nijbarala in Barpeta district and Ansarul Islam (22) from the Furhaniyat area in Nagaon district. During the operation, authorities also confiscated three mobile phones and the vehicle's registration documents.
Faruk Ahmed, the Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) for Dima Hasao, stated that the accused are being interrogated separately. "We are interrogating the accused separately to trace the source of the contraband and identify the intended recipients," he added, highlighting the focus on dismantling the supply chain.
A Major Haul on a Key Transit Route
Preliminary police investigations suggest that the drug consignment was being transported from Aizawl in Mizoram to Lumding via Silchar. This route underscores the alarming trend of narcotics traffickers exploiting both railway networks and major highway corridors, like NH-27, in the region.
Officials have described this seizure as one of the most substantial drug hauls in the district in recent memory. It underscores the intensified surveillance and enforcement measures being implemented along key transit routes to combat the growing drug menace, especially ahead of the festive season.
The successful operation signals a strong warning from the Dima Hasao police against drug trafficking activities in Assam's southern frontier and the broader Barak Valley region.
