Major Drug Bust at Bhubaneswar Airport: Rs 2 Crore Hydroponic Weed Seized
A significant joint operation conducted by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and customs officials resulted in the seizure of hydroponic marijuana valued at approximately Rs 2 crore at the Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday. The contraband was confiscated from two passengers hailing from Tamil Nadu who had just arrived on an early morning flight from Bangkok, Thailand.
Intelligence-Led Interception and Detention
Acting on specific intelligence meticulously developed by the Bhubaneswar wing of the DRI, the joint enforcement team swiftly detained the two individuals. The illicit psychoactive substance, weighing 5.5 kilograms, was cleverly concealed within their hand baggage. A senior DRI official confirmed the details, stating that the operation was precisely executed based on prior information.
The two carriers are currently undergoing intensive interrogation by drug law enforcement authorities. The primary objective is to uncover the broader smuggling network behind this attempt. "We have launched a comprehensive investigation to trace both backward and forward linkages, aiming to identify all other associates connected to this intricate network," the official emphasized.
Challenges in Unraveling the Smuggling Network
However, the detainees have so far refrained from disclosing any critical details regarding the intended receivers or the complete supply chain. Officials strongly believe that the duo are merely part of a sophisticated, layered system comprising multiple couriers and receivers. This method is commonly adopted by international drug cartels to insulate the masterminds from detection and prosecution.
In such meticulously planned operations, carriers are often deliberately kept in the dark about both the original source and the final delivery destination of the drugs. This strategic opacity makes it exceedingly difficult for enforcement agencies to trace the entire chain. "They typically recruit new carriers for each consignment, ensuring that no single individual possesses knowledge of the complete delivery network," the official explained, highlighting the challenges faced in dismantling such operations.
Spotlight on Bhubaneswar as a Drug Transit Hub
This substantial drug bust has once again turned the spotlight on the growing utilization of Bhubaneswar airport as a transit point for drug trafficking activities. Authorities have reported several interdictions at this airport in recent months, indicating a concerning trend that requires heightened vigilance and continuous monitoring.
Understanding Hydroponic Marijuana and Its Popularity
Hydroponic marijuana, distinct from traditional ganja cultivated in soil, is grown indoors under meticulously controlled temperatures and conditions. This advanced cultivation technique significantly enhances its potency. Officials further noted that hydroponic marijuana from Thailand, often colloquially referred to as the "poor man's cocaine," has become increasingly popular at rave parties across India, particularly in southern states.
The psychoactive compound tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) levels in this variety can reach up to an astonishing 30%, compared to a mere 3% in conventional marijuana varieties cultivated locally in regions like Odisha. This stark difference in potency explains its rising demand and the associated high risks. Authorities suspect the seized consignment was intended for distribution in poll-bound Kerala and Tamil Nadu, where demand for such high-potency narcotics is reportedly surging.
