Gold Ornaments Worth Rs 5 Lakh Stolen in Moving Nagpur Auto

A 47-year-old woman from Gondia fell victim to a daring theft while travelling in a shared autorickshaw in Nagpur on Sunday evening. The incident has sent shockwaves through the city, highlighting the risks associated with shared public transport.

The Unfolding of the Theft

Vaishali Athawale had arrived at Nagpur railway station with her husband to attend a relative's wedding. After their journey, they hired a shared auto-rickshaw bound for Ishwar Nagar in the Nandanvan area. Unbeknownst to them, three unknown individuals were already seated inside the vehicle.

While the auto was in motion, the situation turned precarious. Vaishali sat in the back with her bag, while her husband took a seat in the front. It was during this journey that one of the accused individuals, taking advantage of the close quarters and likely the distraction of the moving vehicle, managed to stealthily remove a small purse from her possession.

Discovery and Police Action

The theft was discovered only after the Athawales had reached their destination in Ishwar Nagar. The stolen purse was not just any bag; it contained gold ornaments valued at a staggering Rs 5 lakh.

Upon realizing the crime, the distressed couple immediately approached the Nandanvan Police. The police have registered a formal case under Section 303(2) BNS against the unidentified accused. An investigation is currently underway to apprehend the culprits.

A Call for Vigilance

This alarming incident serves as a stark reminder for all citizens. The police have urged people to remain extremely vigilant while travelling, especially in shared autos and other forms of public transport where personal space is limited and the potential for such crimes is higher.

Passengers are advised to keep their valuables secure and within sight at all times. The Nandanvan Police's probe continues as they work to bring the thieves to justice and recover the stolen gold.
