Russian National Receives Four-Year Prison Sentence in London for Violent Assault

A 23-year-old Russian man, Matvei Rumiantsev, has been sentenced to four years in prison at Snaresbrook Crown Court in London. He was convicted on charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and perverting the course of justice. The case gained significant attention due to the involvement of Barron Trump, the youngest son of former US President Donald Trump, who alerted authorities after witnessing part of the assault during a video call.

Barron Trump's Critical Intervention from the United States

In January 2025, Barron Trump contacted UK police emergency services from the United States. According to court transcripts, he stated, "I’m calling from the US… I just got a call from a girl, she’s getting beat up." He reported that the video call lasted only a few seconds but showed a shirtless man before the camera switched to a woman being hit while crying. This digital evidence played a pivotal role in the investigation, though the judge cautioned jurors that Barron Trump did not testify under oath or face cross-examination.

Jealousy Over Friendship with Barron Trump Motivated the Attack

Prosecutors revealed that Rumiantsev's actions were driven by jealousy regarding the victim's friendship with Barron Trump, whom she had met on social media. During the trial, Rumiantsev admitted to feeling "jealous to some extent" and expressed unhappiness about their interactions. Mr Justice Bennathan KC, the presiding judge, described him as a man "given to jealousy" who failed to take responsibility for his violent behavior.

Details of the Assault and Victim Impact

The assault occurred on January 18, 2025, after Rumiantsev and the woman had been drinking together. He repeatedly struck her, including hitting her in the face, and dragged her by the hair when she attempted to seek help. The victim later testified that she feared she "might die" during the incident. In her victim impact statement, she described withdrawing from the world entirely and continuing to feel "humiliated, afraid and ashamed." She also expressed belief that Barron Trump's intervention may have prevented a more severe outcome.

Attempts to Obstruct Justice and Acquittal on Other Charges

After his arrest, Rumiantsev made concerted efforts to avoid conviction. He contacted the victim from custody and sent a letter urging her to retract her allegations, leading to the additional charge of perverting the course of justice. However, the court acquitted him of more serious charges, including rape, intentional strangulation, and a separate alleged assault in November 2024. The judge emphasized the importance of relying on verified evidence while acknowledging the significance of Barron Trump's alert in bringing the case to light.

This case underscores the growing role of digital communication in legal proceedings and highlights issues of domestic violence and judicial obstruction in international contexts.
