Sagar Police Solve Staged Murder: Husband Strangled Wife, Burned Car

Sagar Police Uncover Gruesome Murder Disguised as Car Fire Accident

In a chilling case of premeditated murder, Sagar district police have successfully cracked what they describe as a meticulously staged crime, where a husband strangled his wife and then set her body ablaze inside a car to pass it off as an accident. The investigation, which relied heavily on forensic inconsistencies and CCTV footage, led to the arrest of the husband and two accomplices.

Forensic Clues and Evidence Expose the Crime

Police confirmed that the victim, Seema Kurmi, was found charred to death inside a car, but forensic analysis revealed she had been strangled by her husband, Nilesh Kurmi, before the fire was set. The fire did not originate from any mechanical fault or CNG leak, as initially claimed by the suspect, but from the rear seat where her body was placed. Investigators noted the presence of petrol traces and the limited damage to the car compared to the extensive burning of the body, raising immediate suspicion.

A burnt matchstick recovered near the vehicle further strengthened the theory of deliberate arson. This small piece of evidence proved crucial in dismantling the false narrative, police said, highlighting how even minor details can unravel complex crimes.

Detailed Timeline of the Murder and Cover-Up

During interrogation, Nilesh Kurmi admitted to strangling his wife at their residence in Garhakota in the early hours of March 20, following a heated argument linked to his alleged extramarital affair. After ensuring her death, he devised a plan to eliminate evidence. He called his tenants, Ramkrishna Patel and Shubham Patel, under the pretext that his wife had suffered a heart attack and needed hospitalization.

With their help, he placed her body in the car and drove nearly 50 km to a secluded stretch near Chanatoriya on the Sagar-Garhakota road. Around 4 am, he stopped the vehicle, poured petrol over her body on the rear seat, and set it ablaze. The accomplices watched as the fire engulfed the vehicle and her remains.

False Narratives and Contradictory Statements

Following the act, the husband attempted to build a false narrative by calling his in-laws during the return journey, claiming Seema's condition was critical. He later provided multiple contradictory versions—ranging from a heart attack to an accident and even a CNG explosion—but none withstood police scrutiny. CCTV footage from a toll plaza captured the car's movement during the night, corroborating the timeline reconstructed by investigators.

Forensic examination ruled out any explosion, and the CNG system in the vehicle showed no signs of blast damage, further debunking his claims.

Arrests and Investigation Details

The suspect, Nilesh Kurmi, along with accomplices Ramkrishna Patel and Shubham Patel, was arrested. The two co-accused initially claimed ignorance but later admitted to being present when the car was set on fire and deliberately not alerting emergency responders. They were booked for destruction of evidence and criminal conspiracy.

Police homed in on the husband's alleged extramarital relationship as the likely motive, noting that the couple fought frequently and Seema had grown suspicious of his activities, leading to escalating tensions. At the time of the murder, the couple's minor child was asleep in another room; the suspect told his daughter, who had woken up, that her mother was unwell and he was driving her to a hospital.

Ongoing Investigation and Official Statements

The victim's post-mortem report is awaited to conclusively establish if she died before being set ablaze, but investigators are confident she died of strangulation preceding the burning. SP Vikas Shehwal stated that the arrests were made based on strong forensic and circumstantial evidence, with further investigation ongoing into all aspects of the case.

This case underscores the importance of meticulous police work and forensic science in solving crimes that are deliberately staged to mislead authorities.
