Samastipur Dowry Death Case: Body Exhumed After 33 Days Amid Murder Allegations
In a deeply disturbing incident from Bihar's Samastipur district, the body of an 18-year-old woman was exhumed from her grave on Saturday evening, a full 33 days after her death. This extraordinary measure followed persistent allegations by her family that she was murdered over dowry demands by her in-laws.
Victim Identified as Rozeda Khatun
The deceased has been identified as Rozeda Khatun (18), wife of Md Nemotullah from Haripur village under the Singhia police station area. Her father, Md Shaukat Ali of Lilhol village, has made serious accusations that his daughter was killed by her husband's family and buried without informing her parents, while her death was initially presented as a suicide.
Alleged Dowry Demands and Timeline
According to Shaukat Ali's account, his daughter married Nemotullah on October 23, 2025. During the marriage negotiations, the groom's family allegedly demanded Rs 2.5 lakh in cash plus jewellery worth Rs 1 lakh. Shaukat claims he paid Rs 1.25 lakh in cash and jewellery worth Rs 1 lakh at the time of marriage, with the understanding that the remaining amount would be paid after Ramzan.
The situation escalated dramatically on March 9, 2026, during Ramzan, when Rozeda was taken to her matrimonial home by her husband and father-in-law. Shaukat alleges that demands for the pending dowry amount resumed immediately upon her arrival.
The Night of the Tragedy
On the night of March 14, Shaukat received a call from his son-in-law's brother informing him that Rozeda had died by suicide and asking him to come immediately. Being unwell at the time, Shaukat sent his son and other relatives instead. However, they were unable to meet any member of the in-laws' family upon arrival. Most shockingly, the body was buried without the knowledge or presence of the woman's parents.
Family's Struggle for Justice
Shaukat claims that villagers later informed him his daughter had been killed by electrocution. With their assistance, he obtained a video recorded two days after the incident but before the burial, which he alleges shows injury marks on the chest and a black mark around the neck.
The family's quest for justice faced multiple obstacles. They first approached Singhia police station on March 17, but the station house officer was not present. On March 21, they went to the Rosera SDPO office, only to find the officer on leave. Shaukat further alleges that local panchayat representatives asked him to "settle the matter" rather than providing assistance.
Police Action and Investigation
A police team finally exhumed the body from the Haripur graveyard on Saturday afternoon, and it was transported for post-mortem examination the same night. The remains were sent to Sadar hospital for detailed forensic analysis.
Confirming the development, Rosera SDPO Sanjay Pandey stated that the body had been exhumed to ascertain the exact cause of death. "We are also investigating whether there were any lapses or negligence by the police. Strict action will be taken against any police personnel found guilty. Further action will depend on the post-mortem report and investigation findings," he emphasized.
Broader Implications
This case highlights several critical issues:
- The persistent problem of dowry-related violence in certain regions
- Challenges families face in seeking justice through official channels
- The importance of thorough investigation in suspicious death cases
- Potential systemic failures in initial police response
The post-mortem report is now awaited as investigators work to determine whether Rozeda Khatun's death was indeed a suicide as initially claimed, or a murder as alleged by her family. The case has drawn attention to the need for more responsive law enforcement mechanisms in dealing with domestic violence and dowry harassment complaints.
