Supreme Court Demands Haryana Government and DGP Response on CBI Probe for Minor's Rape in Gurugram

The Supreme Court of India has taken a decisive step in the horrific case of a four-year-old girl's rape in Gurugram, issuing formal notices to the Haryana government and its Director General of Police (DGP). This action follows a plea urgently seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the incident, amid allegations of police negligence and insensitive handling.

Court Directs Police and Magistrate to Appear with Case Records

A Bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi, has mandated that the Gurugram Police Commissioner and the investigating officer present themselves before the court on March 25. They are required to bring the complete records of the case, ensuring transparency and accountability in the ongoing investigation.

Additionally, the court has instructed the district judge of Gurugram to obtain a response from the magistrate involved, addressing claims of an insensitive approach during the proceedings. This move underscores the judiciary's commitment to safeguarding the rights of victims, especially minors, in such distressing circumstances.

Senior Advocate Highlights Police Inaction in "Horrific Case"

The plea was brought to the court's attention by senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, who emphasized the gravity of the situation. He informed the court that despite the young victim providing a detailed statement to the magistrate about the traumatic event, the police have failed to take significant action. "There is no arrest made. The site has not been secured. No CCTV footage taken. Household maids are involved," Rohatgi submitted, painting a stark picture of investigative lapses.

Initially, the Chief Justice suggested that the petitioners approach the high court. However, Rohatgi argued that the relevant high court is located in Chandigarh, while the victim's father is employed in Gurugram. He stressed that "a message should go from the highest court of the country" in this "horrific case," leading to the Supreme Court's intervention and scheduling of the matter for hearing on Monday.

Background and Urgent Mention in Supreme Court

On March 20, the Supreme Court had agreed to hear the plea seeking a CBI or SIT probe into the rape of the four-year-old girl in Gurugram. The court took note of an urgent mention by Rohatgi and promptly listed the case for further proceedings. This swift response highlights the judiciary's proactive stance in addressing crimes against children and ensuring justice is served without delay.

The case has sparked widespread concern over child protection and law enforcement efficiency in Haryana. With the Supreme Court now actively involved, there is renewed hope for a thorough and impartial investigation that prioritizes the victim's welfare and holds all responsible parties accountable.
