Second Suspect Apprehended in Chengalpet District Gang-Rape Case
In a significant development in the Athivakkam lake gang-rape case, authorities in Chengalpet district have made another arrest. The incident, which involved a 14-year-old girl, has prompted a thorough police investigation leading to the detention of a second individual linked to the crime.
Details of the Incident and Initial Escape
The events unfolded when a 17-year-old boy from Madurantakam was traveling on a two-wheeler with two girls, aged 14 and 16, towards his native place. As they approached Devathur, two intoxicated men standing by the roadside began chasing the trio on their own motorcycle. Frightened by the pursuit, the boy accelerated but lost control of the vehicle near Athivakkam, causing it to skid.
In the chaos, the boy and the 16-year-old girl managed to flee, leaving the 14-year-old girl behind. The men then captured her and took her to the secluded area of Athivakkam lake, where they gang-raped her. By dawn, the survivor managed to reach the Madurantakam-Thachur Road, where compassionate villagers assisted her in getting to the Chengalpet government hospital.
Police Investigation and First Arrest
After the girl recounted the traumatic incident to medical staff, hospital authorities immediately alerted the police. A special team was dispatched to the scene, launching a comprehensive investigation. Based on a formal complaint filed by the victim's parents, the Melmaruvathur all-women police station registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
During the probe, investigators analyzed mobile tower dump data, which revealed that the phone numbers of both suspects were active in the Athivakkam lake area at the time of the crime. Additionally, examination of CCTV footage showed the accused fleeing the location on a motorcycle.
This evidence led to the arrest of the first suspect, identified as 'Kakka' Balaji, a 26-year-old history-sheeter from Guduvanchery. Balaji was apprehended near Thiruverkadu on Tuesday. Police disclosed that he has more than 15 criminal cases against him, including charges of attempted murder, theft, and robbery. He is officially listed as an 'A' category rowdy operating in and around the Guduvanchery area.
Second Arrest and Criminal Association
Following Balaji's arrest, police utilized his statement to track down his associate, Dhamodhara Perumal, also 26 years old, from Mariputhur. Authorities revealed that Perumal became acquainted with Balaji while both were incarcerated in connection with a theft case approximately six months ago. It was during this time that they allegedly decided to collaborate on criminal activities upon release.
The arrest of Perumal marks a crucial step in the investigation, as police continue to gather evidence and build a strong case against the accused. The use of advanced investigative techniques, such as mobile data analysis and surveillance footage, has been instrumental in identifying and apprehending the suspects.
Legal Proceedings and Community Impact
The case has drawn significant attention from the local community and law enforcement agencies, highlighting the importance of swift action in crimes against minors. The application of the POCSO Act underscores the legal framework's commitment to protecting children from sexual exploitation and ensuring justice for victims.
Police officials have assured the public that the investigation is ongoing, with efforts focused on securing convictions and preventing such incidents in the future. The collaboration between hospital authorities, villagers, and the police has been praised as a model of community vigilance and support for victims of violent crimes.
