Chennai: In a significant development within the legal framework of the state, Sekar Durai, who previously served as the joint director of prosecution, has been appointed as the director-in-charge of prosecution. This appointment is part of the ongoing reshuffle and appointments of law officers to represent the new TVK government in various courts.
Succession and Termination
Sekar Durai succeeds G Krishnaraja, who had been serving as the director of prosecution since November 2024. However, a Government Order (GO) issued by the Home (Courts VI) department on May 29 terminated the services of Krishnaraja with immediate effect. Notably, the order did not provide any specific reason for this termination.
Role of the Director of Prosecution
The director of prosecution holds a pivotal position as the head of the state's prosecuting machinery. This role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, including overseeing criminal cases, managing public prosecutors, and ensuring that trials are conducted fairly and impartially. Additionally, the director evaluates investigation reports, provides advice to the police, and makes critical decisions regarding the filing of appeals or revisions in higher courts.
Sekar Durai's appointment comes at a time when the TVK government is actively restructuring its legal team to align with its administrative priorities. His experience as joint director of prosecution is expected to bring continuity and expertise to the office.
